The Final Journey of Mangalore’s First
Carmelite
Bro. Gregory Menezes of the Holy Trinity, the first Carmelite friar
from the Diocese of Mangalore, passed away on September 29, 2024, at
the age of 95. Hailing from Holy Cross Parish, Cordel, Mangalore,
and affectionately known as "Giga Brother," he played a pivotal role
in the development of the Karnataka-Goa Province. He made his
profession on June 10, 1975, and served in various communities of
the Province, contributing significantly to its growth. One of his
notable achievements was transforming barren lands around the
monasteries into fertile farms, showcasing his dedication and "green
thumb."
Throughout his life, Br. Gregory was loved by the Carmelite fathers
and brothers for his wisdom, simplicity, and unwavering commitment
to service. His time with the Belgian Carmelite community in Goa had
a profound influence on him, helping to shape the future of the
Karnataka-Goa Province.
In his final years, Br. Gregory resided at St. Joseph’s Monastery,
Carmel Hill, where he lived a life of prayer and austerity, never
complaining about the pain and suffering he endured. His peaceful
passing on the feast of the Archangels was a fitting conclusion to a
life of faith and devotion. He was laid to rest on October 1, the
feast of St. Thérèse of Lisieux.
The funeral rites on October 01, 2024 began at 2:45 p.m. with the
Divine Mercy Chaplet, followed by a visit from the Bishop of
Mangalore, Most Rev. Peter Paul Saldanha. The Carmelite friars then
prayed the Office for the Dead. The funeral Mass commenced at 3:30
p.m., presided over by Most Rev. Aloysius Paul D’Souza, Bishop
Emeritus of Mangalore, along with the Provincial Superior, the
Episcopal Vicar for Religious, and 48 Carmelite priests from across
the Province.
Fr. John Sequeira delivered a homily, drawing parallels between the
virtues of St. Thérèse and Br. Gregory’s silent and humble life. Fr.
Gregory D’Souza shared a eulogy, emphasizing how Br. Gregory’s
simplicity, humility, and silence deeply impacted the Province.
Following the Mass, the Provincial Superior expressed his gratitude
to the Carmel Hill community for the care extended to Br. Gregory
during his illness, and commended the fathers and brothers for their
selfless service. Fr. Melvin D’Cunha, the Superior of the Monastery,
proposed a vote of thanks to all who participated. Fr. Stifan Perera
led the funeral rites, while the Carmel Choir provided a meaningful
accompaniment to the liturgy.
The final rites, included the symbolic offering of candles by those
close to Br. Gregory. A solemn procession followed, with lit
candles, wreaths, and hymns accompanying the body to the cemetery.
There, the Provincial conducted the prayers, and Br. Gregory Menezes,
the senior-most friar of the Province, was laid to rest with deep
respect.
The Karnataka-Goa Province acknowledges the silent and faithful
service of Br. Gregory and prays for his eternal rest in the
heavenly abode.
