Striking the Right Chord: Music Workshop
Elevates Seminary Brothers’ Skills
Music echoed through the halls of St. Joseph’s Monastery, Carmel
Hill, Mangalore, as the Theology Brothers gathered for a day-long
music workshop that beautifully intertwined theory, practice, and
spirituality. Held on October 10, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, the
session was led by the seasoned musician and mentor, Sangeetguru –
Mr. Joel Pereira, who shared not only his technical expertise but
also his contagious passion for sacred music.
The day began with a solemn inauguration ceremony. Fr. Deep
Fernandes, OCD, offered the opening blessing and spoke about the
profound link between music and the spiritual life, reminding the
Brothers that music is not merely an art, but a form of prayer and
divine expression. Fr. Alwyn Sequeira, OCD, then warmly introduced
the resource person, setting a tone of enthusiasm and openness for
the day ahead.
The workshop unfolded across a series of well-structured and
engaging sessions. It began with an “Introduction to Musical
Singing” and a refresher on the “Basics of Singing”, focusing on
essential vocal techniques for those engaged in music ministry. Mr.
Pereira’s interactive approach ensured that every
participant—whether novice or experienced—felt encouraged and
enriched.
As the day progressed, the Brothers explored the “Various Types of
Music”, followed by a fascinating segment on the “Analysis of
Musical Masterpieces.” This session helped participants appreciate
how creativity and structure blend to produce timeless works,
inspiring them to view musical composition as not just a technical
craft but a spiritual offering.
A major part of the workshop centred on sacred music. Through
sessions on the “Basics of Church Music and A Cappella,” the
participants delved into the beauty of Gregorian Chant and
Polyphonic Singing, two rich traditions that have shaped the
Church’s liturgical heritage. Mr. Pereira guided them beyond
technique, leading them into the spirit and prayerfulness that
underlie these musical forms.
The afternoon sessions emphasized practical application. In “The
Role of the Choir in Liturgy,” the Brothers were reminded that a
choir’s mission is not performance but prayerful leadership, helping
the faithful to participate fully in worship. This was followed by a
hands-on session on “How to Train a Choir,” where participants
received valuable insights into both the musical and pastoral
aspects of directing a choir.
The workshop concluded on a creative and inspiring note with a
session on “How to Compose Music and Lyrics.” Mr. Pereira encouraged
each brother to discover his unique musical voice and to use it in
service of the Church’s mission. This final segment stirred hearts
with hope and creativity, planting the seeds for future compositions
that may one day resound in chapels and sanctuaries.
By the close of the day, the Theology Brothers left the workshop not
only with enhanced musical knowledge and refined vocal skills but
also with renewed zeal and a deeper sense of purpose in their
ministry. Thanks to Mr. Joel Pereira’s expert guidance and the
vibrant, prayerful atmosphere, the workshop proved to be a truly
transformative experience—one that will continue to echo in their
hearts and liturgical celebrations for years to come.
