A Moment of Grace and Service: Ordination of
Br. Ruban to the Diaconate
Sunday, 19th October 2025, will be remembered as a historic and
grace-filled day in the annals of the Karnataka-Goa Province and the
parish of Santa Maria a Ripa, Empoli, Florence. On this day, the
parish community, together with many Carmelite friars, joyfully
witnessed the diaconate ordination of Br. Ruban Karikaparamb Vargees,
OCD, conferred by Msgr. Gherardo Gambelli, the Archbishop of
Florence.
The celebration held a double significance, as the Empoli Carmelite
community also marked 25 years of its presence and service in the
parish and the Archdiocese of Florence. The faithful, filled with
enthusiasm and devotion, participated wholeheartedly in the solemn
liturgy — a rare and blessed event, as the parish had not witnessed
a diaconate ordination for several decades.
With reverence and joy, the Church welcomed Br. Ruban into his new
ministry of service at the altar and to the People of God. In his
homily, the Archbishop highlighted the importance of prayer in the
life of a deacon, reminding that only through a deep and constant
relationship with God can one draw the strength and fidelity needed
for ministry.
The liturgical celebration was enriched by the presence of Carmelite
priests and brothers from various communities — Scala (Rome),
Teresianum (Rome), Capannori, Legnano (Milan), and Florence.
Faithful from neighbouring parishes also joined in the celebration,
enhancing the atmosphere of communion and thanksgiving.
The day concluded with heartfelt gratitude and joy as all present
praised God for the gift of Br. Ruban’s vocation and his generous
response to the Lord’s call to serve the Church in humility and
love.
