Free Eye Check-up Camp Held at Infant Jesus Shrine, Bikarnakatte
As part of the Annual Feast celebrations of the Infant Jesus, a free
eye check-up camp was successfully organised at the Infant Jesus
Shrine, Bikarnakatte, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The camp began
at 9:00 a.m. and received an overwhelming response from the local
community.
The camp was organised in association with the Carmel Jyothi Public
Charitable Trust. A team of doctors from Dr Agarwal Eye Clinic,
Mangaluru, including ophthalmologists Dr Krisma, Dr Vijitha, and Dr
Mahesh, along with their supporting staff, conducted comprehensive
eye screenings and advised suitable corrective measures to the
beneficiaries. As part of the outreach, 150 pairs of spectacles were
distributed free of cost to those diagnosed with vision problems,
bringing visible relief and happiness to many.
The camp was formally inaugurated by Rev. Fr Melvin D’Cunha,
Superior of St Joseph’s Monastery, along with other dignitaries, by
symbolically watering a plant, underscoring the message of care,
growth, and service to humanity.
Rev. Fr William Miranda, Secretary for Social Apostolate, welcomed
the gathering. Addressing the gathering, he highlighted the Trust’s
ongoing social action initiatives, emphasizing its commitment to
healthcare, education, and welfare programmes for the
underprivileged.
The event witnessed the presence of Rev. Fr Stifan Perera, Director
of the Infant Jesus Shrine, Mr Ronald Colaco, and Mrs Elsie from
World Vision, who extended their support to the initiative. Around
150 people benefited from the eye screening camp.
Speaking on the occasion, the organisers also highlighted the
wide-ranging social outreach of the Carmel Jyothi Public Charitable
Trust, which operates through its branches at Huvina Hadagali (Vijayanagar),
Jagalur in Davanagere district, and Kadaganchi in Kalaburagi
district. The Trust regularly conducts similar medical camps in
villages and prisons, provides nutritious food to TB patients,
organises animal care camps, and undertakes various initiatives
aimed at the welfare of society.
The free eye check-up camp was widely appreciated by the
beneficiaries and stood as a meaningful expression of the Shrine’s
commitment to holistic service during the Annual Feast of the Infant
Jesus.
