Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Celebration at
Benoni, Johannesburg
The Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel was
joyously celebrated on Saturday, July 12, 2025,
at the renowned shrine in Benoni. The highlight
of the event was the concelebrated Mass presided
over by His Eminence Cardinal Stephen Breslin,
Archbishop of Johannesburg. This celebration was
particularly special as it marked Cardinal
Breslin's first official visit to the shrine,
and he was warmly welcomed by the congregation.
A significant number of devotees gathered for
the occasion, coming together under the theme
"Pilgrims of Hope." During his homily, Cardinal
Breslin emphasized the interior life of Mary,
inviting the faithful to reflect on her profound
faith and commitment.
In a meaningful ritual, the scapulars were
blessed and distributed to the faithful,
symbolizing their devotion to Our Lady of Mount
Carmel. This act is a cherished tradition among
the faithful, serving as a reminder of their
commitment to live a life guided by Mary’s
virtues.
At the conclusion of the Mass, Fr. Rayan Pais,
the Rector of the Shrine, expressed gratitude to
Cardinal Breslin and all the priests present,
including community members Fr. Boniface D’Souza,
Fr. John D’Souza, Fr. Kaushik Parmar, as well as
guest priests Fr. Lawrence and Fr. Klement SDB,
the provincial. Their collective participation
enriched the liturgical celebration and
strengthened the community’s bonds.
Adding to the significance of the day, the relic
of St. Therese of the Child Jesus was unveiled
at the end of the Mass, further inspiring the
congregation. The blessing of the relic marked a
profound moment of connection to the saints,
enriching the spiritual experience for everyone
present.
Overall, the celebration of the Feast of Our
Lady of Mount Carmel at the shrine was a
resounding success, filled with faith, hope, and
communal warmth, reinforcing the spiritual
journey of all faithful.
